ABSTRACT

Women living with serious mental illness (SMI) are at increased risk for adverse pregnancy and parenting outcomes. However, little is known about the experiences and preferences of women with SMI related to addressing pregnancy and parenting with their mental health providers. We conducted semistructured interviews with twenty-two reproductive-age cisgender women patients living with SMI. Participants characterized discussions about pregnancy and medication teratogenicity with their mental health providers as limited or unsatisfactory. Participants' openness to discussing pregnancy varied by topic and its perceived relevance to their individual circumstances, and it hinged on participants' trust in their providers. Participants characterized discussions about parenting with their mental health providers as helpful and identified additional opportunities for parenting support. Our findings highlight critical gaps in the delivery of information, support, and resources that can inform efforts to increase providers' capacity to address pregnancy and parenting with women living with SMI.

ABSTRACT

This study explored the relationship between parenting stress, parenting style, parenting quality, and young children's executive function. In total, 243 firstborns aged 2-9 years old (SD = 3.82) and their parents from two-child families in Beijing participated in the study, which used executive function tasks and parenting questionnaires. The results found that (1) parenting stress negatively predicted parenting quality; (2) parenting style partially mediated the relationship between parenting stress and parenting quality; (3) children's executive function partially mediated the relationship between parenting stress and parenting quality; and (4) the spoiled, democratic, permissive, and authoritarian parenting styles each play a chain mediating role with young children's executive function between parenting stress and parenting quality. Taken together, these findings provide implications for scientific parenting of children with different psychological characteristics (such as executive function) in multiple-child families under Parenting stress.

BACKGROUND: The literature supports the role of parental dispositional mindfulness on parent-child relationship quality. However, little is known about the connection between these two aspects. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether emotion regulation during parenting, that is, the ability to control negative emotions, mediated the association between parental dispositional mindfulness and parent-child relationship quality. The study also explored the moderation role of child age on the association between parental dispositional mindfulness and parent's ability to control negative emotions during parenting. METHODS: Participants were 635 mothers of children aged between 12 months and 5 years. Mothers completed self-report questionnaires to measure maternal dispositional mindfulness, mother-child relationship quality and maternal control of negative emotions during parenting. RESULTS: Results showed that maternal ability to control negative emotions during parenting partially mediated the association between maternal dispositional mindfulness and mother-child relationship quality. Moreover, the moderation role of child age indicated that the association between maternal dispositional mindfulness and maternal ability to control negative emotions during parenting was stronger for older children's mothers. CONCLUSION: Dispositional mindfulness has a protective role for the quality of parenting and the mother-child relationship. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

ABSTRACT

In contemporary Brazil, the number of male fathers taking care of their sons and daughters and the initiatives to produce content about fatherhood on Instagram have been significant. This article aims to analyze the concepts that support the digital activism of homoparenting on Instagram, based on gender studies with men. To this end, a qualitative study was conducted using the life narrative method in a digital environment. The results were analyzed and divided into the following sections: parenting project, personal experience of fatherhood, articulation with LGBT political agenda when parenthood becomes a "business", and haters, criticism, and adverse reactions. It was concluded that the reflection on the experience of fatherhood/masculinity itself is crossed by the social marker of the difference in sexual orientation and the activism for rights that sustain content production. Thus, the uniqueness of each fatherhood is highlighted since the fact of being gay constructs the fatherhood experience for each man. Despite the initiatives brought forth in this study, changes are still in progress, as rights activism coexists with the advancement of conservative forces, which limit the expressions of sexual and gender otherness.


No Brasil contemporâneo tem sido expressivo tanto o número de homens-pais assumindo o cuidado de seus filhos e filhas, quanto das iniciativas de produção de conteúdo sobre paternidades no Instagram. Este artigo visa analisar as concepções que sustentam o ativismo digital da homoparentalidade no Instagram, a partir dos estudos de gênero com homens. Para tal, realizou-se um estudo qualitativo em ambiência digital, utilizando o método das narrativas de vida. Os resultados foram analisados e divididos nas seguintes seções: projeto de parentalidade; experiência pessoal de paternidade; articulação de agenda política LGBT; quando a paternidade vira um "negócio"; e haters, críticas e reações negativas. Conclui-se que a reflexão sobre a própria experiência de paternidade/masculinidade, atravessada pelo marcador social da diferença orientação sexual e o ativismo por direitos que sustentam a produção de conteúdo. Assim, ressalta-se a singularidade de cada paternidade, pois o fato de ser gay constrói a experiência de paternidade particular para cada homem. Apesar das iniciativas expostas, mudanças ainda são incipientes, visto que o ativismo por direitos coexiste com o avanço de forças conservadoras, que limitam as expressões das alteridades sexuais e de gênero.

ABSTRACT

Considered until recently unfit to rear children, non-heterosexual people have been excluded from forming families in most countries. Many, worldwide, demand access to family formation, claiming the same aptitudes as heterosexual people for raising children. However, when non-heterosexual singles and couples want to become parents in Spain, they must consider transnational contexts, resorting to inter-country adoption or surrogacy abroad, processes that contribute to delay their family formation. They must consider not only Spanish sociocultural conditions, but other countries' legal restrictions regarding parents' gender, social status, and sexual identity. These families experience great difficulty in gaining access to reproductive health services. Based on multi-site ethnographic fieldwork, this text addresses how, despite legislative changes allowing homoparental family formation in Spain, these parents must overcome complex bureaucratic processes when they decide to have children, while facing homophobic attitudes and policies in their quests to become parents.

ABSTRACT

This qualitative study, with five participating interlocutors, sought to understand the senses and meanings of parenting among trans men who became pregnant before gender transition. Analysis was conducted in light of social theories of gender. The results demonstrated an experience of parenthood subject to a field of tensions and negotiations, as well as subjective production that oscillated between transgression and accommodation of the cultural perspective of their own experience. The forms of violence found to be practiced reiterated social vulnerabilities, exposed healthcare service weaknesses and produced harmful effects on transgender men who become pregnant before gender transition.


Buscou-se compreender os sentidos e significados do exercício parental entre homens trans que engravidaram antes da transição de gênero por meio de uma pesquisa qualitativa, na qual participaram cinco interlocutores, cuja análise foi realizada à luz das teorias sociais de gênero. Os resultados demonstraram uma experiência parental sujeitada a um campo de tensão e negociações, além de uma produção subjetiva que oscilava entre a transgressão e a acomodação da perspectiva cultural da sua própria vivência. Identificou-se práticas de violências que reiteraram as vulnerabilidades sociais, deflagraram as fragilidades dos serviços de saúde e provocaram efeitos deletérios em homens trans que engravidam antes da transição de gênero.

ABSTRACT

Comprehensive access to medically assisted reproduction procedures and techniques in Argentina has been assured by National Law No. 26,862 since 2013. This Law does not include surrogacy procedures, and the lack of specific regulation shifts practices to a paralegal setting. In this context, planned parenthood by male couples through surrogacy is performed through actions that convey demands for access rights and active State policies. For these couples, the argument is that surrogacy is the only option to have a child with a genetic bond with at least one of the two parents and recognize both filiatory bonds. This work results from field work in progress with parents from the Province of Buenos Aires running this practice in Argentina. Based on in-depth interviews, we attempted to rebuild personal experiences and analyze the meanings that the narratives construct regarding their parenting, the biological connections in establishing or defining family relationships, and the importance of genetics in constructing and maintaining affiliations.


En Argentina desde 2013 existe la Ley Nacional 26.862 de acceso integral a los procedimientos y técnicas de reproducción médicamente asistida (TRA). Esta no incluye los procedimientos de gestación por sustitución (GS) y la ausencia de regulación específica mueve las prácticas a un escenario de paralegalidad. En este contexto, las paternidades planificadas por parejas de varones a través de GS se llevan adelante mediante acciones que vehiculizan demandas de derechos de acceso y políticas activas del Estado. Para estas parejas el argumento es que la GS representa la única opción para tener un/a hijo/a con vínculo genético con al menos uno de los dos padres y poder reconocer ambos vínculos filiatorios. El presente trabajo es el resultado de un trabajo de campo en proceso con padres de Buenos Aires que están llevando adelante esta práctica en Argentina. A partir de entrevistas en profundidad intentamos reconstruir las experiencias personales y analizar los sentidos que construyen las narrativas respecto de sus parentalidades, las conexiones biológicas en la creación o definición de los lazos familiares y analizamos la importancia de la genética en la construcción y mantenimiento de vínculos filiatorios.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to elucidate the challenges faced in the exercise of male homoparenting, through an integrative literature review. Following PRISMA guidelines, empirical studies from the last 22 years were analyzed, independently collected by four researchers using the PubMed and APA PsychNet databases, with the descriptors "Homosexuality, Male" and "Father". The results reveal the unique and complex reality faced by homosexual men in the parental context. While some studies highlight significant challenges, such as stigmas and social prejudices, others do not observe such difficulties. The decision to become a father among homosexual men is influenced by factors specific to their reality, in a context where parenthood is not widely accepted. The findings of this study emphasize the need to understand the complex interactions among individual, social, and cultural factors in male homoparenting. In summary, this study highlights the need for inclusive and diversity-sensitive approaches to support family well-being.


Este estudo visa elucidar os desafios enfrentados no exercício da parentalidade homoafetiva masculina por meio de uma revisão integrativa da literatura. Seguindo as recomendações PRISMA, foram analisados estudos empíricos dos últimos 22 anos, extraídos das bases de dados PubMed e APA PsychNet. Os descritores "Homosexuality, Male" e "Father" foram empregados para a seleção de artigos relevantes, processo realizado independentemente por dois pesquisadores. Os resultados indicam uma complexidade nas experiências parentais de homens homossexuais, variando entre desafios significativos, como estigmas e preconceitos sociais, e situações sem dificuldades notáveis. A decisão de assumir a paternidade nesse grupo é fortemente influenciada por fatores específicos à realidade homoafetiva, inserida em um contexto social frequentemente não acolhedor. Os achados destacam a importância de compreender as interações entre aspectos individuais, sociais e culturais na formação da homoparentalidade masculina. Este estudo sublinha a necessidade de políticas e práticas inclusivas e sensíveis à diversidade, visando o apoio ao bem-estar familiar em contextos homoafetivos.

ABSTRACT

Sex-gender-diverse and non-monogamous strain cisnormativity and mononormativity. In scientific terms, the parenting arrangements of these people are uncertain. Thus, this ethnography aims to understand the perception of non-monogamous sex-gender-diverse people about parenting. The theoretical framework adopted is derived from non-monogamous studies, love and sexuality from the Social and Human Sciences in Public Health and the digital ethnography methodological framework. Fieldwork occurred from 2021 to 2022 through an online WhatsApp group. Participant observation was employed in the group, and semi-structured online interviews were held. Two categories emerged: a) The non-monogamous parenting nodes and b) Collective parenting. In the first, the importance of bonds in affective networks is explored, and the barriers to these family arrangements are exposed. The second describes the importance of living in a community, and Indigenous and Black ancestry is revived. The revived ancestry and ways of living in a community gain importance as we understand their relevance in the experience of parenting for sex-gender-diverse people who are non-monogamous.


Pessoas sexo-gênero-diversas e que são não-monogâmicas tensionam a cisnormatividade e a mononormatividade. Em termos científicos, há uma nebulosidade quanto aos arranjos parenterais dessas pessoas. Assim, esta etnografia objetiva compreender a percepção de pessoas sexo-gênero-diversas não-monogâmicas sobre parentalidades. O referencial teórico utilizado partiu dos estudos não-monogâmicos, amor e sexualidade das Ciências Sociais e Humanas em Saúde da Saúde Coletiva, e o metodológico da etnografia digital. O trabalho de campo ocorreu entre 2021 e 2022, em um grupo on-line do WhatsApp. A observação participante foi empregada no grupo e foram realizadas entrevistas on-line semiestruturadas. Emergiram duas categorias: a) Os nós das parentalidades não-monogâmicas e b) As parentalidades coletivas. Na primeira, se explora a importância do vínculo nas redes afetivas e expõe as barreiras desses arranjos familiares. Já na segunda, se descreve a importância do viver em comunidade, bem como o resgate à ancestralidade indígena e negra. O resgate à ancestralidade e às formas de se viver em comunidade ganham relevo à medida que se compreende a importância que estes possuem na vivência das parentalidades de pessoas sexo-gênero-diversas e que são não-monogâmicas.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to understand experiences of double motherhood during antenatal, childbirth and postpartum healthcare, using a qualitative method involving individual online interviews and asynchronous, online focus groups of cisgender women, mostly in same-sex relationships. The results revealed how these women's experiences of parenting were marginalised, highlighting institutional violence in Brazilian healthcare services, which are presented here in two thematic dimensions: 1) Cisheteronormativity and its impact on experiences of double motherhood; and 2) Institutional violence in healthcare services: from curiosity to LGBTQIA+phobia. It was concluded that cisheteronormativity hinders healthcare for these experiences, especially by rendering the non-gestational mother invisible. This underscores the urgent need to train healthcare personnel, rethink and challenge cisgender and heterosexual norms and promote inclusive policies to ensure equitable care and combat institutional violence.


Objetivou-se compreender as experiências de dupla maternidade na atenção à saúde durante o pré-natal, parto e puerpério a partir de um método qualitativo, utilizando entrevistas individuais on-line e grupo focal on-line assíncrono com mulheres cisgêneros, a maioria em relacionamentos homoafetivos. Os resultados revelaram a marginalização das vivências parentais dessas mulheres, destacando a violência institucional presente nos serviços de saúde brasileiros, sendo apresentados em dois eixos temáticos: 1) Cisheteronormatividade e seu impacto nas experiências de dupla maternidade e 2) Violência institucional nos serviços de saúde: da curiosidade à LGBTQIA+fobia. Conclui-se que a cisheteronormatividade prejudica a atenção à saúde para essas experiências, especialmente ao invisibilizar a mãe não gestante, destacando a urgência de capacitar profissionais de saúde, repensar e desafiar as normas cisgênero e heterossexuais e promover políticas inclusivas para garantir cuidados equitativos e combater a violência institucional.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems among children at preschool age are a common issue across the world. As shown in literature, a caregiver's parenting style can play a critical role in child development. This study aims to examine the associations between a caregiver's parenting style and the mental health problems (or not) of their child when he/she is at preschool age in rural China. METHODS: Participants were children, aged 49 to 65 months, and their primary caregivers. The primary caregivers of the sample children completed the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire, Short Version, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and a questionnaire that elicited their socio-demographic characteristics. The level of cognitive development of each sample child was assessed using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Fourth Edition. Pearson correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, and multivariable regression analysis were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The prevalence of mental health problems among sample children at preschool age was high (31.6%). If a caregiver practices an authoritative parenting style, it was found to be negatively associated with the mental health problems of their child. In contrast, a caregiver's authoritarian parenting style was positively associated with the mental health problems of their child. Compared to those in a subgroup of primary caregivers that used a combination of low authoritative and low authoritarian parenting style, primary caregivers that used a combination of high authoritarian and low authoritative or a combination of high authoritative and high authoritarian were found to have positive association with child health problems. A number of demographic characteristics were found to be associated with the adoption of different parenting styles. CONCLUSION: Different parenting styles (including authoritative, authoritarian, and combination of authoritative and authoritarian) of the sample caregivers had different associations with the mental health problems of the sample children. Parenting programs that aim to improve the parenting styles (favoring authoritative parenting styles) should be promoted in an effort to improve the status of child mental health in rural China.

ABSTRACT

Parental reflective functioning (PRF) refers to a parent's capacity to reflect on and understand the inner mental states of their child, their own mental states with regard to their child, and how these mental states may influence their behavior and interactions. This capacity has been shown to foster secure attachment in children and their socio-emotional development. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Polish translation of the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ), a brief screening measure of PRF, in a large community sample of Polish mothers of children aged 0-5 years (N = 979). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the hypothesized three-factor structure of the PRFQ, which consists of three subscales: prementalizing modes, certainty about mental states, and interest and curiosity in mental states. However, item loadings suggested that the 15-item version fitted the data better than the original 18-item version. These three PRFQ subscales exhibited satisfactory and moderate six-month test-retest reliability. They also correlated in theoretically expected ways with several criterion measures such as maternal attachment, maternal parenting stress, parental role restriction, depression severity, and borderline symptoms. In conclusion, this study is the first to provide preliminary evidence for the reliability and validity of the PRFQ as a measure of parental reflective functioning in Polish mothers.

BACKGROUND: There are no validated instruments in Spain for measuring parental feeding styles. The aim was to validate the Parental Feeding Styles Questionnaires (PFSQ) in a Spanish sample. METHOD: A total of 523 mothers of 523 school-children participated. The children had a mean age of 4.4 years ( = 1.3), with 51% being boys ( = 4.3 years, = 1.4) and 49% girls ( = 4.5 years, = 1.3). The PFSQ and the Comprehensive General Parenting Styles Questionnaire (CGPQ) were used. RESULTS: A model of four correlated factors was identified: Prompting/encouraging eating, emotional feeding, instrumental feeding, and control over eating. Cronbach's alpha for the subscales ranged from 0.64 to 0.86, and McDonald's Omega coefficient ranged from 0.66 to 0.86. Emotional feeding and prompting/encouraging eating had values above 0.70, control over eating had a value of 0.68 and instrumental feeding had an alpha coefficient of 0.64 and omega coefficient of 0.66. The factor structure was similar to the original and to other adapted versions. The Spanish sample used more control over eating and prompting/encouraging to eat. CONCLUSIONS: The adapted PFSQ is a suitable instrument for assessing the feeding styles of Spanish parents.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have found that parenting style significantly predicts emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) among Chinese adolescents, the mechanism between different parenting styles and EBPs requires in-depth investigation. In our study, we aimed to investigate the mediating effect of resilience, a positive psychological characteristic, between parenting style and EBPs among Chinese adolescents. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we used a multistage stratified cluster random sampling method to collect data in Shenyang, Liaoning Province from November to December 2019. Self-developed questionnaires were distributed to 1028 adolescents aged 10-18. Finally, the study consisted of 895 participants. The bootstrap method was used to investigate the role of resilience as a mediator in the relationship between different parenting styles and EBPs from a positive psychology perspective. RESULTS: The mean score of EBPs was 12.71 (SD = 5.77). After controlling for variables such as gender, age, left-behind children, family type and family income, resilience partially played a mediating role in the associations of paternal rejection (a × b = 0.051 BCa95%CI:0.023,0.080), maternal rejection (a × b = 0.055 BCa95%CI: 0.024, 0.086), paternal emotional warmth (a × b = -0.139 BCa95%CI: -0.182, -0.099) and maternal emotional warmth (a × b = -0.140 BCa95%CI: -0.182, -0.102), with EBPs. The effect sizes were11.28%, 11.51%, 40.76%, and 38.78%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Resilience could partially mediate the relationship between parenting style and EBPs, highlighting that parents should adopt a positive parenting style and that resilience improvement could be effective in reducing EBPs among Chinese adolescents.

ABSTRACT

It is well known that parental depression is correlated to adverse child mental health outcomes; but what is the effect of treating parental depression on the child? This narrative review aims to explore this question, and how certain specific interventions designed to help depressed parents affect mental health outcomes in their children. The academic database APA PsychInfo was searched for articles that broadly included interventions for parents with depression as well as child wellbeing or outcomes as of October 2023. Additional searches were conducted in the academic database PubMed in December 2023 and January 2024. Forty-nine articles met the inclusion criteria and were examined closely for this review. The studies included were divided into the following categories: psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, parenting support, and paternal interventions. We discuss the implications of our review on clinical practice and recommend further research in this area.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The role of negative parenting in the development of callous-unemotional (CU) traits remains unclear. Both negative parenting and CU traits are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. The authors used genetically informed longitudinal cross-lagged models to examine the extent to which reciprocal effects between negative parenting and children's CU traits in mid-to-late childhood are genetic versus environmental in origin. METHODS: In 9,260 twin pairs from the Twins Early Development Study, the authors estimated cross-lagged effects between negative parenting (discipline and feelings) and children's CU traits in mid (ages 7-9) and late (ages 9-12) childhood. RESULTS: CU traits were strongly heritable and stable. Stability was explained largely by genetic factors. The influence of negative parenting on the development of CU traits was small and driven mostly by genetic and shared environmental factors. In mid childhood, the influence of children's CU traits on subsequent negative parenting (i.e., evoked by children's CU traits) was also small and mostly genetic in origin. In late childhood, CU traits showed no effects on negative parental discipline and small effects on negative parental feelings, which reflected mostly shared environmental factors. CONCLUSIONS: In mid-to-late childhood, genetic factors strongly influenced the development of CU traits, whereas environmental effects of negative parenting were small. Negative parenting was also relatively unaffected by CU traits. The small reciprocal effects originated mostly from genetic and shared environmental factors. Therefore, repeated intensive interventions addressing multiple risk factors rather than negative parenting alone may be best positioned to support families of children with CU traits across development.

ABSTRACT

As government-funded universal programs for new parents continue to expand, it is critical to investigate their short- and longer-term effects. The level of knowledge, especially on the effect of group-based interventions, is sparse. This study is the second report from a large trial of a widely implemented universal group-based parenting program in Denmark and includes outcomes on child socio-emotional problems and use of health services. A sample of 1701 unborn children from families representative within the area, were randomized to intervention or care as usual beginning November 2014. From these families, 1268 mothers and 999 partners (mean age 29.4 and 31.19, respectively; 6% migration background) filled in the Ages and Stages Questionnaire. Intention-to-treat-analyses showed fewer socio-emotional problems in the intervention group (between-group difference - 2.34, 95% CI [0.40, 4.30], d = - 0.13) as reported by mothers, but not partners, when children were 10 months old. This finding was transitory (no longer significant at 19 months). No effects were found on health care utilization. The previous report from this trial showed no effects on measures of parenting. In total, these findings serve the purpose of adjusting future expectations to the size and type of effect to be gained from a universal parent program in a resourceful setting. We conclude that even if the Family Startup Program (DK: Familieiværksætterne) 2 was liked, well implemented, and well attended by the parents, the positive effect on children's socio-emotional problems, was too modest to be the argument that can carry the weight of policy going forward. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: This study examined the effects of the Family Startup Program (DK: Familieiværksætterne), a universal, group-based program to support parents during the transition to parenthood. Results showed a modest transitory preventive effect on children's socio-emotional problems and no effects on health care utilization. These findings adjust down previous expectations to the size and type of effects to be gained from universal group-based parent support in a well-resourced setting.

BACKGROUND: Living with a child with Down syndrome (DS) influences the entire family, including caregivers. AIMS: This study examined positive and negative caregiver feelings about parenting youth with DS and to what extent children's demographic, cognitive, behavioral characteristics, and co-occurring medical conditions are associated with those parental feelings. Specifically, the mediatory role of child behavioral challenges on the relationship between child executive functioning (EF) and parent feelings about parenting a child with DS was examined in a mediation analysis model. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Parents of 113 youth with DS aged 6 to 17 year rated their positive and negative feelings about parenting, and their child's behavioral challenges and EF. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS: Externalizing and Internalizing behavioral challenges and emotional and behavioral regulations of EF were significantly associated with positive and negative parent feelings. Child behavioral challenges fully mediated the relationship between child EF and caregiver feelings about parenting, after controlling for identified covariates of child demographics. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Findings have implications for understanding the role of EF, through its impact on behavioral challenges, on the feelings of caregivers about parenting a child with DS. These findings play a role in understanding outcomes of interventions targeted at EF and behavioral challenges, in the context of other child variables.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between theory of mind (ToM) and loneliness as well as the potential moderating effects of parenting style on this association. A total of 689 Chinese third-grade students (341 girls and 348 boys; Mage = 9.23 years, SD = 0.66) were recruited from eight primary schools and were followed from Grade 3 to Grade 5. These students reported their primary caregivers' parenting style in third grade and completed the same ToM task and loneliness questionnaire at each time point from Grade 3 to Grade 5. The study's results indicated a bidirectional relationship between ToM and loneliness, implying that children with less developed ToM abilities tend to feel lonelier and, conversely, that higher levels of loneliness are associated with lower ToM skills. Moreover, the study demonstrated that parenting style influenced the association between ToM and loneliness. Specifically, the impact of ToM at Grade 3 on reducing loneliness at Grade 4 was greater among children who experienced high levels of rejection from their caregivers compared with those with low levels of rejection. In addition, this study found that loneliness at Grade 3 had a greater influence on ToM at Grade 5 for children experiencing low levels of emotional warmth from their caregivers than for those who experienced high levels of emotional warmth. These findings highlight the significance of ToM as both a precursor and consequence of children's loneliness and emphasize the variation in these longitudinal relationships based on the parenting styles of primary caregivers.
